What is Meta tag and where it Used

Metadata Elements or Meta tags provides the metadate about the HTML document, Metadate are not show on the page, but its machine parsable. Meta tags are used to specify the page description, Keywords, author for the page, last modified and other metadatas. Meta tags are found within the <head>…</head> section of your website pages. Meta tags plays important role in SEO (Search Engine Optimization).

Meta tag Attributes

The Most used Meta Tag attributes are :

  • Name
  • Content
  • http-equiv
  • scheme
  • charset

also some other meta attributes are: itemprop, property, dir, lang, xml:lang.


Meta tag attribute : Name

This Meta attribute ‘Name’ is used defines the name for the metadata, and it should not be set when any one these ‘itemprop, http-equiv or charset’ attribute is also set. The most used values for this metadata are “description,application-name, author, keywords, generator, etc… ”

Meta tag attribute : Content

This Meta attribute ‘content’ give the value associated with the name or http-equiv attribute. In the example below example content will give the value for the description, refresh respectively.

<meta http-equiv=”refresh” content=”30″ />

Meta tag attribute : http-equiv

This Meta attribute ‘http-equiv’ is used in place of ‘Name’ attribute., HTTP servers use this meta attribute to gather information for HTTP response message headers.

In this example It used to show what is the content type that the page used and the charset. Also it used in many other ways like to refersh the page, set expires dates, cookies etc…,
